Plant Cutting Technician

Qualterra, Inc. is seeking a Plant Cutting Technician to join our Plant Production team.


The Plant Production Team

Qualterra’s Plant Production is responsible for producing the highest quality fruit tree and vine rootstock for the agriculture industry.


The Role

This position involves the responsibility of moving the plantlets through a detailed tissue culture process in a controlled and sterile environment. We are looking for a is full time employee, 40 hours a week. Working hours are 9-5.

Reports to: Director of Plant Production


Responsibilities

  • Cutting and transferring plants using a sterile technique in accordance with tightly defined protocols
  • Equipment care and cleaning
  • Maintaining computer records of work


Experience and skills

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Prior experience with plants.
  • Ability to perform high-volume, repetitive, work requiring manual dexterity, precision, and attention to detail.
  • The ability to closely adhere to standard operating procedures and sterile environments.
  • Laboratory experience is a plus.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly in close proximity to others
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage stress that can be associated with tight deadlines and high-volume throughput

What you'll do: 

This position serves to provide Qualterra with an individual who will work primarily in the field at the installation site/sites and involve a combination of indoor and outdoor operation.

  • Run and maintain the Biomass Processing Units
  • Off-load and bag biochar – totes and 1 cu ft bags.
  • Maintain and clean the site to maintain a safe and professional appearance.
  • Maintain Inventory of Tools and Equipment.
  • Accounts for time and materials used in various tasks.
  • Performs Diagnostics, Repairs, and Upgrades.
  • Follow safety rules and regulations.
  • Provide feedback to engineering department to promote system development.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What you'll contribute to our team

  • Machinery Operation.General Knowledge of major system components.
  • Knowledge of trade specific tools.High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Title: Human Resources Generalist

About this position: The Human Resources Generalist carries out responsibilities in the following areas: recruitment/employment, onboarding, job descriptions & FLSA compliance, and assisting with administration of the company HRIS. Responsibilities for managing the full cycle recruiting process include partnering with hiring managers, screening resumes, assisting in interviews, and managing orientation and onboarding. Responsibilities for overseeing the administrations of the HRIS include maintaining certain aspects of recordkeeping, database management, and configuration and implementation of HR program functions.

What you'll do:

  • Manage full cycle recruiting process to include writing effective job advertisements, identifying recruiting sources, identifying & validating testing requirements, screening and referring top applicants for final interviews.
  • Evaluate and implement new ways to recruit qualified candidates utilizing various recruitment sources, social media, etc., while operating under department budgetary guidelines.
  • Continuously assess the availability of HR related data in order to track and analyze metrics (hiring; turnover; time to fill; trends, etc.)
  • Create and update company job descriptions & determine FLSA exemption status.
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive onboarding and new hire training program, utilizing the HRIS and working with appropriate supervisors, hiring managers, and subject matter experts.

What you’ll contribute to our team:

  • Bachelors in Human Resources or related field preferred (HR; Organizational Developments; Business)
  • 4+ years of rounded Human Resources experience to include full cycle recruitment.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal employment laws, including EEO, compliance, Recruiting and selection, FLSA, OSHA, WISHA, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing job descriptions, FLSA status determination and effective job postings.
  • Experience with an integrated HRIS system is required.

About this position: Our greenhouse location in Sunnyside, WA is the second stage for our fruit tree plantlets which are transitioning from tissue culture to the controlled environment greenhouse, and eventually outdoors. The role of the greenhouse technician is to aid the head grower in transitioning the plants successfully through each stage. 

What you'll do:

  • Transplanting, uppotting, sorting, cleaning, pruning, and watering of plant materials
  • Preparing of materials for daily projects (drilling pots, cleaning equipment, generating labels, etc.)
  • Maintaining an organized workstation

What you’ll contribute to our team:

  • Prior success with, or capability to, perform high-volume, repetitive, hands-on detail work 
  • Prior experience working in a greenhouse environment
  • Prior experience working with plants
  • Precision and manual dexterity
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs

About this position: We are seeking a skilled and experienced Greenhouse Sr. Manager to oversee the successful cultivation of crops from tissue culture in our greenhouse facility, including apple, cherry, pear, grape, and hops. As the Greenhouse Sr. Manager, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of greenhouse production, including planning, cultivation, monitoring, and maintenance. Your expertise will contribute to the efficient growth and development of production plants, ensuring optimal plant health while meeting production targets for timely delivery to the customer. This is a critical role that requires a deep understanding of greenhouse operations, horticulture, and the specific needs of trees.

What you'll do:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive cultivation plans for crops, taking into account factors such as shipping and receiving schedules, transplanting, watering, dormancy, and pest/disease management.
  • Coordinate with the Plant Production team to align cultivation plans with overall business goals and market demands.
  • Ensure efficient resource utilization, including labor, materials, and equipment, to maximize productivity and minimize waste.
  • Oversee all stages of cultivation, from receiving tissue culture plantlets to delivering plants at final spec., ensuring proper nutrition, irrigation, pruning, and training techniques are employed.
  • Monitor and adjust environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light levels, and CO2 levels to create optimal growing conditions.
  • Implement integrated pest management strategies and disease control measures to minimize the use of chemicals and maintain plant health.
  • Implement and manage irrigation systems, including water quality monitoring and nutrient delivery, to ensure proper hydration and nutrition for apple trees.
  • Develop and maintain records of cultivation activities, including planting dates, growth rates, environmental conditions, and crop yields.
  • Track and maintain up to date plant inventory at each stage of growth and document loss/survival.
  • Supervise and train greenhouse staff, providing guidance on cultivation techniques, safety protocols, and performance expectations.
  • Foster a positive work environment, encouraging teamwork, collaboration, and continuous learning among greenhouse personnel.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and identify opportunities for professional growth and development.

What you’ll contribute to our team:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field. Proven experience in greenhouse management, preferably with a focus on fruit tree cultivation.
  • Familiarity with integrated pest management practices (IPM) and disease control measures specific to temperate fruit trees. Holder of an IPM license valid for the State of Washington.
  • In-depth knowledge of temperate fruit tree cultivation techniques, including pruning, grafting, and training methods.

What you'll do:

  • Overall responsibility of the Mechanical design of the Biomass Gasification Systems and associated material handling systems 
  • Utilize SOLIDWORKS to create 3D models and 2D drawings of mechanical components. 
  • Develop and maintain overall configuration and specifications of the Biomass Gasification Systems and associated systems. 
  • Work closely with the electrical engineer on system designs 
  • Interface with outside vendors to select, maintain and ensure source of purchase for mechanical parts and subsystems. 
  • Develop site level designs for materials handling and conveyance. 
  • Develop technical and cost proposals for new Biomass Gasification installations. 
  • Responsible for Reliability and Maintainability documentation associated with the mechanical portion of the systems. 
  • Analysis of mechanical systems – thermal, structural and combustion 


Production/Test Site Support: 

  • Provide Mechanical Engineer support as needed to maintain necessary production capacity 
  • Assist with troubleshooting of system and component failures and implementation of corrective actions to improve system and site level reliability 
  • Support continued reliability improvement efforts for the Biomass Gasification Systems and the overall site 
  • Create new designs and support installation and testing 
  • Support on-site customer visits – including site preparation and site tours

• 5+ years of 3D CAD design experience, ideally in Solidworks

Position: Field Trial Scientist

About this role: The Field Trial Scientist is accountable for overseeing our portfolio of on-farm, greenhouse, and research station trials that deliver data to support our product commercialization. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and implementation of the trials as well as the integrity, analysis, and interpretation of the data. The Field Trial Scientist will be successful through the establishment of a program culture of excellence in safety, compliance, data returns, and cross-functional relationships and partnerships.

What you'll do:

  • Develop research trial strategies to meet our commercialization goals
  • Establish and maintain a program culture of excellence in safety, compliance, data returns, and cross-functional relationships
  • Lead research trial site selection and the trial design processes
  • Develop and implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program across all trial sites
  • Lead research trial site data collection, analysis, and interpretation
  • Become a proficient user of internal databases and software systems to track and monitor research trial performance

What you'll contribute to our team:

  • Ph.D. degree with at least two years of industry experience; additional relevant work experience may be substituted in place of the Ph.D. degree
  • At least 2 years of demonstrated personnel management, corporate team-leading experience
  • The successful candidate’s degree and experience must be focused on agriculture, and horticulture, with a preferred emphasis in any of our targeted specialty crops of apples, cherries, pears, grapes, and/or hops
  • Demonstrated experience with the Microsoft suite of office software
  • Experience with farm equipment operation and basic maintenance and troubleshooting is preferred
  • Knowledge of modern agricultural technologies and trends
  • A proven self-starter who can work independently and/or as part of a cross-functional team
  • Superior communication skills with a variety of audiences/stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate both positive and negative results to leadership and stakeholders
  • An entrepreneurial and passionate outlook on corporate life
