Plant Cutting Technician

Qualterra, Inc. is seeking a Plant Cutting Technician to join our Plant Production team.


The Plant Production Team

Qualterra’s Plant Production is responsible for producing the highest quality fruit tree and vine rootstock for the agriculture industry.


The Role

This position involves the responsibility of moving the plantlets through a detailed tissue culture process in a controlled and sterile environment. We are looking for a is full time employee, 40 hours a week. Working hours are 9-5.

Reports to: Director of Plant Production


Responsibilities

  • Cutting and transferring plants using a sterile technique in accordance with tightly defined protocols
  • Equipment care and cleaning
  • Maintaining computer records of work


Experience and skills

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Prior experience with plants.
  • Ability to perform high-volume, repetitive, work requiring manual dexterity, precision, and attention to detail.
  • The ability to closely adhere to standard operating procedures and sterile environments.
  • Laboratory experience is a plus.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly in close proximity to others
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage stress that can be associated with tight deadlines and high-volume throughput

Agricultural Mechanic/Technician

What you'll do: 

This position serves to provide Qualterra with an individual who will work primarily in the field at the installation site/sites and involve a combination of indoor and outdoor operation.

  • Run and maintain the Biomass Processing Units
  • Off-load and bag biochar – totes and 1 cu ft bags.
  • Maintain and clean the site to maintain a safe and professional appearance.
  • Maintain Inventory of Tools and Equipment.
  • Accounts for time and materials used in various tasks.
  • Performs Diagnostics, Repairs, and Upgrades.
  • Follow safety rules and regulations.
  • Provide feedback to engineering department to promote system development.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What you'll contribute to our team

  • Machinery Operation.General Knowledge of major system components.
  • Knowledge of trade specific tools.High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Driver’s License / Good driving record as determined by the company
  • Proof of Auto Insurance.
  • Ability to travel to rural areas for daily work.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds regularly.
  • Expertise with material handling.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and repair experience.

Title: Molecular Plant Testing Scientist

Status: Full-time, non-exempt

Rate of Pay: $60-80K

Location: Pullman, WA

What you'll do: 

Support molecular plant testing and research lab. Perform virus screening and variety verification for all Qualterra’s crops. Client sample testing, grant research work, protocol development, support discovery and commercialization of new products.

  • Daily lab work requiring knowledge and application of molecular biology techniques.
  • Nucleic acid extraction by varied methods both DNA and RNA.
  • Perform and analyze endpoint PCR, quantitative PCR, and reverse transcription PCR.
  • Primer design (esp. qPCR) (CLC workbench), primer validation, multiplexing, troubleshooting.
  • Construct libraries and perform next generation sequencing from DNA and RNA, multiple platforms.
  • Receive client samples, log, process, store, project set up, execution, analysis, and report.
  • Perform QA/QC for initiation materials, tissue culture plant production stock and greenhouse stock.
  • Maintain logs and notebook, update and create protocol. Report results to supervisor in multiple formats.
  • Perform lab work and data analysis for funded grants, assist in formal presentation of milestones and results.
  • Attend trade shows and scientific conferences, keep current with literature and techniques.
  • Maintain orderly lab and equipment.


What you'll contribute to our team

  • Master’s degree with 5 years’ experience or PHD in plant molecular biology, horticulture, plant genetics or a related discipline
  • Experience with nucleic acid isolation, amplification, analysis, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to solve problems through deductive reasoning and the application of scientific principles
  • Capable of design and interpretation of scientific experiments and statistical analysis
  • Ability to manage processes and project management
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and compile reports

Title: Human Resources Generalist

About this position: The Human Resources Generalist carries out responsibilities in the following areas: recruitment/employment, onboarding, job descriptions & FLSA compliance, and assisting with administration of the company HRIS. Responsibilities for managing the full cycle recruiting process include partnering with hiring managers, screening resumes, assisting in interviews, and managing orientation and onboarding. Responsibilities for overseeing the administrations of the HRIS include maintaining certain aspects of recordkeeping, database management, and configuration and implementation of HR program functions.

What you'll do:

  • Manage full cycle recruiting process to include writing effective job advertisements, identifying recruiting sources, identifying & validating testing requirements, screening and referring top applicants for final interviews.
  • Evaluate and implement new ways to recruit qualified candidates utilizing various recruitment sources, social media, etc., while operating under department budgetary guidelines.
  • Continuously assess the availability of HR related data in order to track and analyze metrics (hiring; turnover; time to fill; trends, etc.)
  • Create and update company job descriptions & determine FLSA exemption status.
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive onboarding and new hire training program, utilizing the HRIS and working with appropriate supervisors, hiring managers, and subject matter experts.
  • Develop and monitor dashboards, metrics and automated data feeds and reporting for HR purposes (recruiting, benefits, performance management, retention, etc.)
  • Process all unemployment claims in timely and appropriate fashion including coordinating documentation & witness testimony for hearings.
  • Assist with the development of training material, review with HR Manager to ensure relevant/needed content and assist with scheduling training locally and remotely where applicable.
  • Ensure federal and state compliance posters, for all affiliates, are up to date (updated annually and when changes happen throughout the year) and that they are posted in the correct locations.
  • Assist in the annual benefits review and end enrollment process
  • Respond to routine employee questions on benefits, leave of absences, policies, and procedures as needed.
  • Recommend and assist in the development of training material for employees and supervisors.
  • Support the fair and consistent administration of all human resources policies and practices.
  • Provide measurement reports (hiring, safety, etc.) to HR Manager.
  • Conducts employee exit interviews.
  • Attend job/career fairs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll contribute to our team:

  • Bachelors in Human Resources or related field preferred (HR; Organizational Developments; Business)
  • 4+ years of rounded Human Resources experience to include full cycle recruitment.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal employment laws, including EEO, compliance, Recruiting and selection, FLSA, OSHA, WISHA, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing job descriptions, FLSA status determination and effective job postings.
  • Experience with an integrated HRIS system is required.
  • Experience processing unemployment claims is a plus.

About this position: The VP/Sr. Director of Finance serves to direct and participate in the organization's financial planning and oversees all accounting and finance functions while directing and participating in activities based upon the overall strategic objectives of the Company, and manages all relationships with lending institutions, shareholders, investors, and CPA firms.

About this role: The Field Trial Scientist is accountable for overseeing our portfolio of on-farm, greenhouse, and research station trials that deliver data to support our product commercialization. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and implementation of the trials as well as the integrity, analysis, and interpretation of the data. The Field Trial Scientist will be successful through the establishment of a program culture of excellence in safety, compliance, data returns, and cross-functional relationships and partnerships.

What you'll do:

  • Develop research trial strategies to meet our commercialization goals
  • Establish and maintain a program culture of excellence in safety, compliance, data returns, and cross-functional relationships
  • Lead research trial site selection and the trial design processes
  • Develop and implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program across all trial sites
  • Lead research trial site data collection, analysis, and interpretation
  • Become a proficient user of internal databases and software systems to track and monitor research trial performance

What you'll contribute to our team:

  • Ph.D. degree with at least two years of industry experience; additional relevant work experience may be substituted in place of the Ph.D. degree
  • At least 2 years of demonstrated personnel management, corporate team-leading experience
  • The successful candidate’s degree and experience must be focused on agriculture, and horticulture, with a preferred emphasis in any of our targeted specialty crops of apples, cherries, pears, grapes, and/or hops
  • Demonstrated experience with the Microsoft suite of office software
  • Experience with farm equipment operation and basic maintenance and troubleshooting is preferred
  • Knowledge of modern agricultural technologies and trends
  • A proven self-starter who can work independently and/or as part of a cross-functional team
